2010 CCTV Housing for installation in London, Kent & South East

In the last decade in which the use of CCTV for public area surveillance in the UK has developed at a faster rate than anywhere else in the world from less than a handful of city systems in 1990 to now around 400 town and city centre systems covering well over 1,000 UK cities. Add to that all the Universities, Major Shopping Malls, Hospitals, Ports and Airports, Train and Bus Stations, Retail and Commercial Users all covering public open space and the figures grow and grow so that there are currently probably about 1.5m cameras focusing on these areas alone.

Everywhere we go CCTV monitors our movements, there is now around one CCTV camera for every 14 people in the UK. CCTV cameras in stores monitor shoplifters, those in cash machines look for fraud gangs, those on public transport watch vandals and thugs. But they also watch ordinary people at the same time. Digital CCTV systems can be configured to use face-recognition and look for criminal suspects. An estimated £500m of public money has been spent on installing CCTV in the last decade.
